Coping with Dental Anxiety and Phobias
The anticipation of a dental appointment or dental emergency affects everyone differently. Some look forward to having their teeth cleaned and others would rather run a marathon. Childhood trauma, ill-matched personalities or just plain fear, prevent individuals from maintaining their dental health.
This all-too-common “dental phobia” prevents people from receiving necessary routine dental care, potentially compromising the health and functionality of their mouth and smile. Scientists are increasingly observing a connection between oral bacteria and the effects on your heart. Additionally, it is being linked to conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, preterm labor and even some cancers.
Bacteria organisms release toxins that enter the blood stream and circulate throughout the body – in particular, the body’s arterial system. The plaque that forms in the mouth is, indeed, the same plaque that causes narrowing of the arteries (or atherosclerosis). Routine cleanings and the removal of this bacterial buildup can limit your risk and exposure.

In addition to local anesthetic, we do offer Nitrous Oxide (sometimes referred to as ‘laughing gas’). We have found, however, that many former “white knucklers” have relaxed so much so that there is no longer a need for them to have anything other than local anesthetic!
