Dental Sealants

WHY DENTAL SEALANTS, YOU ASK???

A patient of ours recently mentioned that as a child, he had dental sealants when they were new to the dental field.  Sealants, along with his regular dental checkups, prevented him from getting his first cavity until the age of 23!   Children’s teeth can be very cavernous with depressions and grooves on the chewing surface.  These irregularities are called pits and fissures.  While Fluoride treatments and fluorinated water helps fight decay on the smooth surface of the tooth, pits and fissures are impossible to keep clean and the bristles of a toothbrush cannot reach them.  This makes for a great place for plaque and food to hide.

WHAT IS A DENTAL SEALANT?

Sealants are a thin, liquid cover that is ‘painted’ over these pits and fissures after the tooth is washed, bonded and finally light cured.  This aids in the prevention of children’s posterior (back) teeth from getting decay.  Each tooth takes only a few minutes to seal.

WHO SHOULD HAVE DENTAL SEALANTS?

Children get the most benefit from having Sealants applied; however, it’s not unheard of young adults having them applied.

INSURANCE AND DENTAL SEALANTS…

Most insurance companies cover Dental Sealants at 100%, up the age of 14!  Our office can assist you in determining your benefit coverage.

MONEY SAVING…

Being proactive with Dental Sealants can save you money in the long run.  Protected teeth may save time and expense of having a tooth restored.  Sealants will be checked during your child’s regular dental visits to see if reapplication* is necessary.

*consistent chewing of ice, hard candy, etc. may require reapplication
